The Maze Runner

I really wanted to read the series of The Maze Runner by James Dashner, I couldn't stop jumping and screaming when they arrived (I know it sounds a little bit excessive but I couldn't help myself).

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He's surrounded by strangers--boys whose memories are also gone.
Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It's the only way out--and no one's ever made it through alive.
Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

After all the romantic books that I've been reading lately I wanted to change and try something different.

The first thing I realised was that the book jumps directly into the action, there isn't like an introduction, it's just Thomas in the lift and then in the Glade. I like this detail because it makes the reader want to read the next page immediately despite the fact that it's only the beginning.

Like all dystopian novels the author has to be capable of transporting the reader to the new world by the use of the descriptions. Right now I have a perfect image of the Glade, the Gladers and the Grievers (that one is not a very nice image, pretty gross to be honest) in my mind. Each one of the characters has a unique personality, I specially love Newt, Minho and Thomas (they'd definitely be  my best friends). James has done a great job in that department.

All the humour and witty comments are a way to hide the misery the feel after two years looking for a exit. I really enjoyed them and laughed a lot. The humour balances the seriousness of the matter of surviving and the death.

One thing I missed was more Teresa, she arrived at the beginning but stays in coma for at least half of the book. She's the only character we don't get to know really well. We only catch a glimpse of her personality at the end. But I bet that her story with Thomas and WICKED deserves more importance. I hope that in the next books all my questions will have an answer.

One thing that surprised me at first was the language, the slang of the Gladers. It was a bit confusing at first but you get used to it. You learn the words just as Thomas does.

Overall it's a book that you won't be able to stop reading so prepare to be hooked.
Rating: 4.7*
